All match starting times and location will be confirmed prior to Thursday practices.

There are numerous tournaments throughout the season if you are interested please see me.

We need to know by the end of Thursday’s practices whether your child will be wrestling in the meet that week. This is very important!!

We will provide directions to all meets on Thursday before the meet. Any questions please call one of the coaches.

Frequently asked questions

What age does my child have to be? We have wrestlers from the age of 5 to 13 in our program and even have had 4 year olds with exhibition matches.

What type of wrestling will they be doing? Traditional folk style

Who will my child wrestle? During practice they will be partnered with someone very close to their weight and experience. The coaches may have an experienced wrestler work with a new wrestler to help improve his skills. In meets they will be wrestling someone with the same weight (within 4 lbs), experience, and age.

What is a meet? This is where our wrestlers show their skills and knowledge of what they have learned from the practices. We will compete against 2 other teams with each wrestler generally having 2-3 matches per meet. A match is 3 (1) minute periods.

When are the meets? We typically wrestle on Saturday mornings from 9am to 1 pm. This could change depending upon who and where we are wrestling that day.

Where are the meets? Our home meets will be held at the Strath haven High School gym and our away meets depend upon the team that week.

How many meets are there?

When are practices? Mondays and Wednesdays with advanced wrestlers going to Tuesday and Thursday nights. This may change due to room availability.

What time is practice? Practice starts at 6:00pm and will end at 7:30pm

What does my child need to wear? In the practice room they should wear gym shorts, t-shirts, and wrestling shoes. The wrestling shoes should be carried to the wrestling room before putting them on. We do not want outside dirt brought on to the mats that the kids will be wrestling on. They should also bring jackets, hats, and sweatpants for leaving since they will be sweaty after practice. Some wrestlers wear knee pads. Headgear is not required at these ages.

What will they wear at the meets? We will provide all the wrestlers with a singlet, shorts, and a T-shirt.

Where can I get wrestling shoes? All the major sporting goods stores sell wrestling shoes. We even have an exchange for kids who no longer fit into last years shoes if anyone is interested.  Jim Newlon has an Asics account.  Please go to www.Asicsamerica.com if you want to see what they have to offer.  Then contact Jim Newlon with your order and we will notify you when your order comes in.

What if my child misses practice? It is not unusual for kids to miss practice because of a number of reasons. We do ask that if you child misses a Thursday practice before the meet to contact one of the coaches and confirm whether or not they will wrestle on Saturday. Otherwise we will see them at the next practice.

How intense is the program? Our program has been designed as a feeder program for the Middle School and High School programs. Our goal is to introduce kids to the sport and teach them basic skills which they will further develop as they get older. There are many programs out there which would be considered very intense with practices 4 nights a week, meets on Saturday, and tournaments on Sundays. If you are looking for that level we can recommend a number of programs. We want our kids to enjoy the competition and appreciate the oldest sport in the world. Our practices involve conditioning, learning new skills, live wrestling, and games. Over the last few years our wrestlers have really performed well against some of the more established programs in the area.

Can I drop my kids off for practice? The coaches will be in the wrestling room, so the kids will not be met till they arrive there. We ask our parents to remain in the hall if they like since the room is too crowded with spectators. The coaches will not leave till the last child has left the school. If you do drop-off and do not stay we ask that you leave a contact number.
